Moving to Denver? Here’s What I Wish Every Family Knew Before They Land

If you’re planning a move to Denver, welcome to the Mile High Club… the legal one, not the airplane one. I’ve lived in Colorado my whole life, and I’ve helped countless families relocate here. Denver is incredible, but it’s also a place that loves surprises. Kind of like that first snowfall in October that shows up like an uninvited cousin.

Here’s what I wish every family knew before they land.

1. The Weather Does Whatever It Wants

One minute you’re wearing a hoodie, the next minute you’re in shorts with the AC blasting. Colorado really said, “All four seasons… sometimes in the same afternoon.”
But the perk? We get around 300 days of sunshine. Even our snowstorms come with blue skies the next day.

2. Altitude Is No Joke

Whether you’re running, hiking, or simply walking up stairs with your Costco haul, the altitude hits different. Expect headaches or shortness of breath at first. It passes quickly, but your body definitely knows you’re a mile above sea level.

3. Neighborhoods Here Have Personalities

Denver Metro isn’t one size fits all. Families love Parker, Aurora, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, and Littleton because of the schools, space, and parks. Each neighborhood has its own rhythm, its own type of people, and its own vibe.
Choosing the right community matters as much as choosing the right house.

4. Housing Prices Can Surprise You

Colorado isn’t the cheapest state, but with the right guidance, families can get a great home without stretching every dollar. Some suburbs give you more space and better schools for your money. Aurora and Parker especially offer a sweet balance of price, community, and size.

5. The Outdoor Lifestyle Is Real

Living here means getting outside becomes a habit. Trails, parks, mountains, lakes, seasonal events — Colorado gives you endless reasons to shut the laptop and go explore. Even kids who swear they “don’t like hiking” end up loving it.

6. The People Are Friendly

You’ll be surprised how often strangers smile at you here. It’s a mix of sunshine, slower pace, and just straight-up Colorado energy. It’s one of the reasons families stay after moving here.
